MCU Selection Guide for Embedded System Design TXMCHIP
MCU acts as the core controller in embedded products. When selecting a microcontroller, engineers should consider core type, flash, RAM, power consumption, peripherals, package and supply stability. If you are preparing to start MCU development, choosing the right chip and ecosystem can save you a lot of wasted effort. For IoT and portable devices, low power and rich built-in interfaces are highly valued.
Currently, there are several mainstream options on the market.
1. STMicroelectronics (ST) — The undisputed industry leader with the STM32 series.
Characteristics: Most extensive documentation, most complete ecosystem, and the "de facto standard" for corporate recruitment.
Recommended models: STM32F103 for beginners; STM32G0/G4 for cost-effectiveness; STM32H7 for high performance.
Development tools: STM32CubeMX (graphical configuration tool) + Keil MDK or VS Code.
2. Espressif Systems — Currently the most popular choice for IoT.
Characteristics: A shining example of a Chinese brand; features built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; excellent cost-performance ratio; a dominant player in the smart home sector.
Recommended models: ESP32, ESP32-S3 (supports AI voice and image processing), ESP32-C3 (RISC-V core).
Development tools: ESP-IDF, or the Arduino IDE for rapid development.
3. The wave of Chinese brand alternatives — GigaDevice, Geehy, Nation Technologies, etc.
Characteristics: Rose rapidly following the chip shortage; many chips offer pin-to-pin and register-level compatibility with STM32, all at extremely attractive prices.
Recommended models: GigaDevice GD32 series.
